About the workshop

Gigrin Farm, near Rhayader in Mid Wales, is one of the best-known places in the UK to photograph red kites. During the daily feeding session, large numbers of kites gather over the surrounding countryside, creating excellent opportunities for flight images, behaviour shots and wider views of the spectacle.

The workshop will focus on the practical challenges of photographing fast-moving birds in flight. We will look at camera settings, shutter speed, autofocus, exposure, backgrounds and composition, as well as how to adapt as the action, light and weather change.

The aim is to help you come away with stronger images, but also with a better understanding of the decisions behind them.

What we will cover

  • Camera settings for birds in flight

  • Shutter speed and movement

  • Autofocus modes and tracking

  • Exposure compensation and changing light

  • Composition and backgrounds

  • Working with fast-moving subjects

  • Reviewing and adjusting your approach during the session

  • The exact content will depend on the weather, light and the experience level of the group.

Who this workshop is for

This workshop is suitable for beginner and improving wildlife photographers who would like practical help photographing birds in flight.

You do not need to be an expert. The session is designed to help you understand the settings and decisions that make this type of photography easier, including shutter speed, autofocus, exposure and composition.

You will need a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a telephoto lens. The workshop is not suitable for phone photography.

Good to know

Location: Gigrin Farm is close to Rhayader in Mid Wales, with the Elan Valley nearby for those planning to make a longer visit.

Hide: The workshop will be based in the Gigrin Farm Gateway Photography Hide, booked exclusively for our group. This gives us a dedicated position for photographing red kites during the feeding session, with opportunities for flight images as well as birds coming down and landing on the ground later in the session.

Timing: The session runs from 1:30pm to 5:00pm. This gives us time to settle into the hide, talk through camera settings and prepare before the red kite feeding starts at 3:00pm.

Weather: The hide gives us a dedicated position, but Gigrin farm is still an outdoor venue and conditions can change. Please dress for the weather.

Facilities: Gigrin Farm has an on-site café, toilets and free parking. Full joining instructions will be sent before the workshop.

Other species: Buzzards, rooks, crows and ravens may also be seen around the feeding area.

White red kite: Gigrin Farm is known for occasional visits from a very rare white red kite, also known as a leucistic red kite. It cannot be guaranteed, but it is one of the special possibilities at this location.

Wildlife: Red kites are wild birds. Gigrin Farm provides an excellent opportunity to photograph them, but sightings, behaviour, light and photographic results cannot be guaranteed.
